Now, even though everyone and their brother might know this stuff, I figured I'd leave a quick tutorial about them here. All I know is I took off a couple years, and figuring this mess out all over again, was a bit of a pain. So, I'm sure I'm not the only one. So, follow along if you like.
Below is a fully extracted transmission file from PTTM, this is only an explanation, do not use the example here, or, when your game crashes, that is on you. This file can be found in the (chosen) truck folder, as (transmission0), 1, 2, so on.

==============================================
1. [gear count] = How many gears you have in the trans., Reverse is always "gear0", always giving you one more gear in the list, making an 18speed, actually a 19 speed, and again, not counting "ratio0" .
2. You want a high gear for reverse. "10.0" to "12.0" is typically default reverse gears, or walking speed. If you desire a quicker reverse gear, drop in number. Setting reverse to say "6.0" will crawl to start, but wind up pulling you in reverse at around say 45mph...... again, if you want it, it's totally doable.
3. You typically have a 21 gear limit, though some trucks I've driven had 23 gears, again minus reverse, so 22 to 24. I'd stay under 21 gears total, so you don't get the nasty flag from (prism 3-d).
4. You can have as little as three forward gears, but then you'll need to also boost way up, the power, and handling ratings, near the def's bottom. All in all the gears, ratios, power, torque, it's all fully playable, all depending on what you want.
5. You can not have a gear ratio, lower then 1.00. The trans will totally drop out, and take you back three gears, and repeat, when it gets to the gear set so low, at the 1.00 ratio. 1.10 is a safe zone, and depending on what kind of power and torque you have set, can get you over 100mph, at 2,200rpms.
6. The "trans_speed" line, is very touchy, and really nothing to bother with. At best you'll get very little effect from it, playing with the numbers too much to either side of "1.0" will just default back to the stock set.
7. The power and handling ratings, watch what you do here. For you "Tim Taylor" types, yes, there is virtually no limit here. I've made trucks with "drag strip" specs, it's all there. The power and handling can be taken to 999.00, and that is as far as I've been. Keep in mind, all part def files have those lines, and piggy back ratings from all files, for any given truck. I would keep your main number modding, in the engine file only, all else keeping very low number settings. This way you only need to go back to one def to fine tune.
8. Now go have a ball. Also, if you need actual ratio settings, you can visit a junk yard, and scan trans cases for the ratio settings, or scan websites. Line "Dana", "Caterpillar" "Spicer" "Eaton-Fuller", etc.
Any questions, feel free.
